President Barack Obama plans to lift longstanding U.S. restrictions on Cuba, a senior administration official said, allowing Cuban-Americans to visit families there as often as they like and to send them unlimited funds.
The gesture, which could herald more openness with the Castro regime, will fulfill a campaign promise and follows more modest action in Congress this year to loosen travel rules.
The president has authority to loosen the restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba on his own. The new rules will affect an estimated 1.5 million Americans who have family members in Cuba. Other Americans are allowed to travel to Cuba but only if they qualify through certain cultural, educational and other programs.

So what’s the deal!?. I am a Cuban-American, like most of the cubans I am mixed from Afro-Cubans and White-Cubans, I am a former Cuban political prisoner, for the last 29 years, I have not seen my brothers and sisters because, in order to travel to Cuba, all the Cubans-Americans has to fill a form in the Cuban Section of Interest, in Washington, D.C, asking to travel to Cuba, if the Cuban government approved your petition, so you are allowed to visit Cuba, if not, you are not allowed to visit no-one, still if your parents, brothes o sisters are dying. From the 1.5 million of Cuban-Americans in the EE.UU, thousands of thousands, like me, are not allowed or welcome to visit our relatives in the slave island, by order of the Castro’s brothers. Also still if the Cuban government give you permission to visit your relatives it doesn’t means that you are allowed to visit Cuba, as often as you want, it is a lie. The Cuban regime is so restrict at this point, the Cuban Government is tricking the American government and believe me, they are very good at this.
Thanks for sharing your story Hector – let’s hope Obama succeeds in tearing down some of the international walls that were erected in the last administration.
Great article! Thanks for the sharing.
