In the UK on her first visit as First Lady, Michelle Obama seems to be making just as big an impact.
She has attracted as much interest and column inches as her husband on this London trip; creating a buzz with her dazzling outfits, her own schedule of events and her own fanbase.
Outside Buckingham Palace, as crowds gathered in anticipation of the Obamas’ arrival, Mrs Obama’s star appeal was apparent.
Rebecca Smith, from Leicester, was one of the hundreds of people waiting to catch a glimpse of the First Couple.
“She seems to be a good role model. A strong, intelligent woman. I think she’ll go down very well here. People have warmed to the Obamas. I don’t think you’d see this crowd for many other dignitaries,” she said.

Obama, 45, who has been hailed by both U.S. retailers and the media as a new fashion icon, donned a magenta sheath dress for the cover photo. The dress was designed by Jason Wu, who also created her white inaugural ball gown.

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz took the cover photo and several fashion shots featured inside the March edition of Vogue.

With the exception of Bess Truman, every U.S. first lady since Lou Hoover in the 1930s has been featured in Vogue, but Obama is only the second presidential wife to appear on the cover, Vogue said. Hillary Clinton did so in 1998.

The idea first hit Rock in the mid-1990s on a standup tour through Atlanta, where he came across the Bronner brothers hair show, a glitzy convention for black stylists.

“I thought, wow, this would make a great movie, but that was like 15 years ago, and no one was making funny documentaries 15 years ago,” Rock said in an interview Tuesday alongside Nia Long, one of many actresses and other celebrities Rock interviews in the film.

“So you cut to now, and I have daughters, and I’m really dealing with them and their hair a lot, and my friends have daughters, and we talk about our daughters’ hair issues. I kind of saw where to go at it, and now people are making funny documentaries,” he said.

Black hair is certainly big business, and this film will likely gain popularity quickly, as well as spark many less-than-friendly conversations on the good and the bad of nappiness.

Jason Wu’s place in history is all sewn up thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama, who donned his white chiffon gown for the inaugural balls.

The 26-year-old Taipei-born New Yorker’s rapid rise to fame makes him the second designer from the Big Apple to hit the national spotlight on Inauguration Day.

So … who is this guy?

Wu was reportedly introduced to Obama by Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley. She later wore a dress by the designer for a Barbara Walters special just before the presidential election.

Despite his low profile, Wu has earned quite a following among the fashionista set for his hourglass silhouettes and flowing fabrics.

The group of girls at Benton Elementary School gets together weekly to talk about ways to define respect for themselves and others.

Their goal for the day: build their own behavior plans. They sat three to a table and opened their sack lunches – peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, milk and Goldfish crackers.

While they ate, Cathy Cox explained that the floor was hers; the girls could not speak unless they were called on.

Cox reviewed the themes the girls had studied in the past week, then asked them to list some goals for themselves.

“I want ‘I can’ and ‘This means’ statements,” Cox said.

She had their full attention, wielding an encouraging smile one minute and, the next, a look that would make you want to duck under the table.

That combination of support and command is the key to R.I.S.E., a special group for third- through fifth-grade girls at Benton Elementary in Columbia. R.I.S.E. stands for Respecting Individual Style and Expression.
